The Truth about a Flat Stomach

It isn’t right. It isn’t fair. It may not be reasonable. Nonetheless, it’s true. Having a flat stomach is a key component of maintaining an attractive image.

A flat tummy isn’t easy for a lot of people. Some of us just aren’t "put together" that way. Getting a more svelte look isn’t easy and it requires a great deal of effort. That’s incredibly unfair. It’s also pretty shallow. Nonetheless, it’s a fact of life. Here’s why:

First, we’re all consumers of media imagery and it has an impact on our preferences, expectations and perspectives on the nature of beauty. The media is pitching us the idea of a flat stomach being a key feature of an aesthetically-pleasing form.

Take a look at the most popular Hollywood stars. Nary a paunch to be seen. Peruse the covers of magazines. You won’t see many people sporting round bellies. The message is clear and it’s been received.

As such, our concept of beauty involves a flat stomach. If you want to maximize your appeal, you’ll need to focus on your waistline.

Second, clothing is designed to fit those with flatter stomachs. If you have a belly, all of that great stuff in the stores won’t fit right. Period. In order to look your best you may have to shave a few inches off of your mid-section.

Is that fair? Of course not. We’re not here to talk about the "right" things, though. We’re just objectively evaluating reality. And the reality is that today’s clothing doesn’t fit those with "guts" correctly.

Third, there is a slightly more legitimate reason for the societal preference for flatter stomachs. Not being overweight conveys a general sense of health and well-being that people naturally find attractive.

Yes, it’s true that you can be completely healthy while still having a not-quite-flat-stomach. Nonetheless, a slim waist creates a natural appearance of connection with good health.

The flat stomach is "in" and there’s no two ways around it. That leaves you with a choice to make. You can either flatten your stomach in an effort to create a heightened level of appeal or you can eschew the popular outlook on the human form and "let it all hang out".

There are arguments to be made in both directions and it’s quite possible that the pursuit of a svelte tummy may not be ideal in the largest, fairest scheme of things. The reality, however, is that trimming your waist will make you appear more attractive to the bulk of the population. It’s your call.
